Repost for the evening crowd. I’m gonna wind up spending way too much money on more of this film. This shit is magic, I haven’t touched most of these photos, and the few I have are very minor tweaks. Most of these were taken in full sun, but there’s some challenging contrast, and the last couple were taken on an overcast late afternoon, and they’re still serviceable. The snow photos are overexposed, but that’s my/the meter’s fault, not the film.
All taken with a Minolta XE-7, most with the MC 50mm 1.7, last two with my new MD 35-70mm 3.5.

Love the first shot - it’s seriously amazing.
What’s the story on the 323s?

Nice! This is really making me want to start using the old Nikon L35 I have laying around.
Any recommendations on decent but inexpensive (if that’s possible) 35mm film to get started?

G ood old Kodak 100 or 200 speed is a good all around film to get a good feel.

What chariot said, cheapo Kodak is definitely cheap, and perfectly decent. My current go-to cheap film is Gold 200, but I’ve only tried 3 films, so that may change as I try more

UGHHHHH I gotta finish my second roll of this stuff so I can send them out to get developed.
Are you sending them out or developing them yourself?

Thanks! I’m very happy with that one.
No idea, they’re all in front of a restaurant that closed down a while ago. That’s their sign on the crane, it used to be extended up enough that you could see it while driving on the bridge. I used to see 2 or 3 323s in the area, but I guess the resident collector has ramped up.

I’ve been taking everything to London Drugs, the one close to me has the photo lab in it, so I get the scans the next day. I am gonna get my own scanner though, that’ll make a real difference cost-wise.

Ah, Canada-eh.
I just checked and my local Walgreen’s still has a photo lab. I never would have guessed that. Might have to drop a roll off after work.

I see B&H has Gold 200 for $3.29 a roll. I’ll have to give it a shot.

It looks like Gold 200 may be the ticket.

Try walmart too, I get it there, 3 rolls for $12, if you don’t want to pay for shipping

Hopefully they’re good. I often hear less than good things about drugstore labs, but I’ve been really impressed by the London Drugs one

I’ll have to take a look. It actually surprises me that Walmart would possibly have it.

Yeah it surprised me too, but I can’t find it cheaper anywhere else up here. It’s also the only film they have, at least in the one closest to me. Meanwhile London Drugs has a selection of Fuji Superia, as well as a bunch of Ilford. Truly weird, since most Ilford films are E6, and they only have a C41 machine.

The shots with lots in the foreground and lots in the background are really exceptional through most of the range.

Ever think seriously of developing your own? I briefly thought about that in the 90s and then realized I was too lazy and not talented enough for it to make a difference anyway.

It’s what I use when I reach for a roll.
I should also say that Fuji is plenty good, too. If it’s on sale or more readily available, I grab that sometimes.

I briefly thought about it, but I don’t think the effort and risk is worth the savings. I’ll save way more by getting a good scanner and only paying for development.

Yeah, all the reviews I read that raves about the exposure latitude of Ektar were absolutely right. I can’t believe the shadow detail that’s retained, without blowing out the highlights

I’m still leaning to send it out to a mail order lab.

Fair, I’m still gonna have to go somewhere else for anything other than C41 film

I stopped by Walmart on my way home from work this evening, and to my surprise, they did have 35mm film. They only had one choice, Fujifilm Fujicolor Superia X-TRA 400; ~$17 with tax for a 3-pack. I probably would have picked one up, but I have a bit more research to do regarding film speeds (200 vs. 400) , and is best suited for me .
At any rate, even with shipping, B&H appears to be cheaper by about a roll of film for the same thing compared to Walmart. I’m not in a hurry, so I don’t feel the need to pay for the convenience.

Fuji superia is good film, 400 works for daylight/lowlight 200 is more daylight only.
Thats Fuji superia 400
Fuji 200
Kodak Portra400
Portra is good for skin tones if you plan on shooting people.
Fyi Kodak and Fuji are both increasing prices in April 1

Its not as hard as people think. My brother in law did point out to me that the photolabs scanner algorithms probably compensated for any small errors from my temps being off slightly. I guess he has dark room equipment in his parents basement so I’ll probably end up using his enlarger to see how some prints compare to the scans. Cinestill sells a warmer for the chemicals so you can get them at 103 exactly that I may buy for consistency.
I do not want to deal with scanning although it would save a ton of money. Everything I've read on the reasonably priced ones it seems like they're a pain in the ass to deal with. What one are you going with?
![]() 03/22/2019 at 21:20 |

If I had the space to build a darkroom, I might consider it more, but I don’t have easy storage for the chemicals and equipment, let alone space for a darkroom. I’d be using my bathroom, which would be pretty annoying.
I’m looking at an Epson V800 or V850. Not cheap, but splitting the cost with my dad who wants to rescan his medium format slides

The developing stuff doesn’t take up much space. Once it’s in the tank you can do the rest in your kitchen with the lights on. I don’t really have the space for the printing process/darkroom.

I take it you are familiar with this guy’s work? He has a lot of cool kodachromes of “old” Vancouver:

Oh yes, I’ve spent a fair amount of time looking through those

Basically all I shoot now, since Precisa got axed. It does tend to go yellow in shadow areas, but that’s an easy fix in photoshop.

I did my own darkroom work back in high school (don’t ask how long ago that was....) and found it gave me a better appreciation of better planning of my shots in camera, rather than trying to fix things in the dark room. I gave my nephew my old Minolta film camera ( and all of my lenses) who is exploring a career in photography- digital is great, but film gives you discipline.

Come to think of it, I might have seen it via you, I found it from someone on oppo I believe.
You could re-create some vintage looking shots with the Volvo, too.

Haha that was quite possibly me, I know I’ve posted some of his stuff on here.
Yeah I was thinking of that too, it’ll be tricky to fi nd spots with nothing new in frame, but doable

Nice photos ! I may just have to pick up some of both speeds.
Thanks for the heads-up on the price increase!
